Faculty, staff, and students of the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) conducted a 3-Day Training Workshop and Return Demo on Practical Identification of Flora and Fauna last September 20-22, 2022 as part of their extension project entitled “BIOnihan Para sa Kalikasan: Community Community Empowerment Towards Conservation” in partnership with the Kidapawan City Tourism Office. This project is headed by Dr. Cherie C. Mangaoang of the Department of Biological Sciences, CSM with the support of the Extension Services Office (ESO) Director Dr. Mary Joy S. Cañolas and the College Dean Dr. Jonald L. Pimentel. Fifteen trek guides and porters of Mt Apo (Mandangan trail) attended the training. This was conducted to capacitate the target beneficiaries in terms of technical skills in the identification of flora and fauna as this is necessary to determine which taxa need emphasis in terms of conservation or conservation issues. Moreover, the knowledge and skills that these locals gained as the project’s intervention can be a medium of disseminating biodiversity conservation and protection as they get involved in activities like tour guiding.
The first two days of the training workshop included basic lecture on identifying flora and fauna commonly found in Mt. Apo. This was facilitated by Prof. Andrie Bon Flores, Prof. Cromwel M. Jumao-as, Dr. Cherie C. Mangaoang and Dr. Florence Roy P. Salvaña. Return demonstration on identification was done on the third day to assess the capability of the participants on spot identification. They were grouped into two: Team Flora & Team Fauna. The activity was done near the jump-off site of the Mandangan Trail of Mt. Apo.
