The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) President, Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia, with the SOCCSKSARGEN Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research & Development Consortium (SOXAARRDEC) Director, Dr. Josephine R. Migalbin, faculty researcher, Prof. Jalaloden B. Marohom, and SOXAARRDEC Science Research Specialist, Loynei F. Sumalinog conducted a benchmarking activity at Isabela State University (ISU) in Echague, Isabela on July 13-14, 2022 to build possible linkages with the institution.

A courtesy call with the ISU President, Dr. Ricmar P. Aquino and Cagayan Valley Agriculture Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (CVAARRD) Director, Dr. Miladis Afidchao transpired on the first day of the cross visit. Issues and challenges affecting both universities and possible measures to overcome them were discussed.

Pres. Garcia was thankful for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to the USM group; hence, he awarded the Plaque of Appreciation to the ISU family.

Dr. Orlando F. Balderama, ISU Vice President for Research and Development, Extension, and Training, and Atty. Romano O. Cammayo, ISU Vice President for Administration and Finance Services were also in attendance during the courtesy call.

On the second day, three ISU Research Centers were visited namely, Cagayan Valley Small Ruminants Research Center (CVSRRC), Cagayan Valley Cacao Development Center (CVCDC), and Cagayan Valley Fresh Water Fisheries Center (FWFC).

Dr. Jonathan N. Nayga, the Center Director of CVSRRC and Dean of the ISU College of Agriculture shared best practices of the center and showcased the processing laboratory where slaughtering, meat fabrication, and meat processing are done.

In addition, the CVCDC that paved the way for farmers to earn income in Isabela now has six hectares of land for cacao trees. Dr. Myleen R. Corpuz, Director of CVCDC, who is interested in collaborating with USM, underscored that their center has produced 10 patented cacao products that interest international clients. Dr. Isagani P. Angeles Jr., the FWFC Director, showed their newly built building and other facilities established under the DOST-NICER Program of DOST-PCAARRD. He also emphasized his interest in forging a linkage with the University of Southern Mindanao.

Before the pandemic, Pres. Garcia, along with some USM faculty members, had already visited ISU but the collaboration on corn research did not materialize, hence, this recent visit will open new linkages for research and extension endeavors on different agricultural commodities that are common for both institutions.
