Kabacan, Cotabato – Ninety-two third-year Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management students from Mindanao State University – General Santos City (MSU-GenSan) visited the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) for an educational tour aimed at enhancing their agricultural knowledge and practices on April 28, 2025.
During the visit, the students toured USM’s premier agricultural facilities, including the Food Processing Center, the Philippine Carabao Center, and the Biotechnology Unit of the University. The event offered the students a hands-on experience in chocolate production and other value-adding processes for agricultural commodities.

Prof. Kenneth Mirafuentes from the College of Agriculture of MSU-General Santos City (MSU-GenSan) emphasized the purpose of the visit, highlighting its importance in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application.
“The main reason is for our students to engage in a benchmarking activity, learning new things in agriculture that are not yet applied in our university. It’s important for them to see if theoretical teachings are practical and viable in large-scale applications,” Prof. Mirafuentes said.
He also expressed gratitude for USM’s warm hospitality and expressed optimism about future collaborations between the two institutions.
“We hope this visit marks the beginning of a long-term partnership, not just for our students but potentially for our faculty as well,” Prof. Mirafuentes added.
Students also shared their positive impressions of the visit. Tricia Claire Malio, one of the participating students, expressed her enthusiasm for the educational tour.
“The area here at USM is suited for agricultural activities…I learned a lot, especially at the Biotechnology Unit, where they have a new plant culture facility. It was an amazing experience because we don’t usually get this kind of exposure in our university,” Malio shared.
The benchmarking activity reaffirmed USM’s commitment to fostering academic partnerships that contribute to the advancement of agricultural education in the region.
