Miles Angelo P. Sodejana, a third-year Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics student from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), successfully qualified for the Sakura Science Exchange Program in Japan after a screening-online interview on April 22, 2025. 

Out of 15 students, only seven candidates, representing seven State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in Mindanao qualified in the said program.

The Sakura Science Exchange Program is a fully funded initiative that offers students the opportunity to engage in hands-on physics experiments and academic exchange at Okayama University from November 2025 to January 2026, that are intended for BS Physics and BS Applied Physics students from the Philippines Universities.

The collaboration of seven universities in Mindanao starts a linkage with Japanese professors, Prof. Noburo Sasao, Prof. Koji Yoshimura through the efforts of Dr. Michelle Villamayor of CMU. The screening includes academic performances, virtual interviews with the professors from Okayama University.

The SUCs with students who qualified are as follows Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Mindanao State University Main Campus (MSU-Main), University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), Central Mindanao University (CMU), Caraga State University (CSU), and USM.
