The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) convened its faculty members, scholars pursuing PhD, students, and professionals for an International Lecture Workshop on Language Issues in Education on April 3 to 4, 2025 at the Graduate School Conference Room, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

Dr. Doris Lander Payne, an American Linguist and Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the University of Oregon, started her lecture on  Color Terminologies in the World’s language. The importance first language utilization and culture in identifying colors was given emphasis during her talk.

Meanwhile, Dr. Thomas Payne, a senior linguist consultant with Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) Global and Research Associate in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Oregon, talked about Writing Grammar from the Inside Out. In his topic, he stressed that learning grammar is fun, and it must begin using the first language.

Further, Dr. Jose Lalas, a Professor at the University of Redlands California, discussed bridging theory and practice designing theory-based curriculum.  He emphasized that theory helps us see our direction more clearly of where we are going, why are we going there, and how we might arrive safely to our destination.  He further noted that in the classroom, there is always a theory serving as a foundation.

Dr. Ricardo Ma. Duran Nolasco, a proponent of the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education in the Philippines from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, discussed Challenges and Opportunities in Philippines Multilingual Education. He explained that teachers must recognize the native language that students grew up with and they frequently used. His topic stirred numerous issues in education from the audience. Dr. Nolasco then reassured that the solution can start from the participants.

The event aims to address critical language-related challenges in education and provide innovative solutions to enhance teaching and learning practices.

The Office of the International Affairs (OIA) organized the activity in collaboration with the Extension and Services Office (ESO), Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), Graduate School (GS), and GS Student Society.
