The Department of Interior and Local Governance (DILG) XII, through the Regional Gender and Development Council (RGDAC) XII, awarded the University of Southern Mindanao the GAD Seal Certification on October 31, 2024, at the Greenleaf Hotel, General Santos City.

The certification was personally received by Prof. Roselyn M. Clemen, USM Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Person; Prof. Marcos F. Monderin, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Emily T. Montero, Supervising Administrative Officer; Prof. Yvonne V. Saliling, a faculty member from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS); and Engr. Willie Jones Saliling, Executive Assistant for Strategic Initiatives Toward Smart University.

In a separate interview with Prof. Clemen, she emphasized that the GAD Seal would kickstart the mainstreaming of gender responsiveness and inclusivity within the university. Additionally, she highlighted that this award is a testament to USM’s dedication to becoming a safe space for women and all genders and as a prime GAD Zone in the province.

The university was assessed using different criteria, such as utilization of 5% of the university’s budget for GAD, GAD Focal Point System institutionalization and functionality, and a breastfeeding station and child-minding station, among others.

USM is the only SUC in Region XII that met all the requirements to be awarded the GAD Seal, valid until 2027.

The GAD Seal is awarded to local government units, State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and other government agencies in recognition of their initiatives in promoting gender and development in local governance and achieving gender responsiveness, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
