October 30, 2024The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) hosted Higher Education Leadership Mentoring Seminar (HELMS) with resource persons from the University of the Philippines Los Baños on October 28, 2024, at the University Commercial Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.
HELMS is designed to equip the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with the necessary knowledge and resources as HEls take on increasing responsibilities beyond traditional research and instruction.
Topics highlighted were the research policies and programs for research management of UPLB, different approaches of UPLB in digitalizing student affairs and services in the new normal, institutionalizing public service through volunteerism, and UPLB’s efforts in accommodating visitors and tourists in their campus in making UPLB as an educational tourist destination.
During the seminar, questions were raised like the organizational structure of UPLB’s student affairs and designations, if there are overlapping of tasks and targets in offices, the points in accreditation for extension and volunteerism efforts, and how UPLB started edutourism concept.
In response, UPLB experts shared the complementation culture of their offices. Offices in their institution assign portions of tasks to avoid overlapping, and reiterated the importance of collaboration and creating connections for overall institutional development.
Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU), South Cotabato State College (SCSC), Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology (CFCST), Cotabato State University (CotSU), Mindanao State University- General Santos City (MSU-GSC), and Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) were among the SUCs present in the seminar. Also, Maria Theresa Magdolot represented Dr. Nelia Alibin, the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office (CHEDRO) XII Director.
In his speech, Prof. Marcos F. Monderin, the USM Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), highlighted the distinction between internalization and internationalization. He encouraged everyone to prioritize enhancing the skills and capability of the institution’s personnel while at the same time addressing international requirement.
The activity, composed of five plenary sessions, highlighted UPLB’s best practices in research, extension, student affairs, public service, volunteerism, educational tourism, and institutional development. Guided by Dr. Malata-Silva of UPLB, a plenary roundtable discussion took place after the presentations, highlighting the institutional practices and initiatives of the SUCs present.
