Outstanding USM Alumna for Research Delivers Lecture on Invasive Gastropods and Nematode Hitchhikers

The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) convened the State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) of Region XII through the Higher Education Leadership Mentoring Seminar (HELMS), with five (5) resource persons from the University of the Philippines Los Baños on October 28, 2024, at the University Commercial Building, USM, Kabacan, Cotabato.

Dr. Marian P. De Leon, the assistant to the vice chancellor for research and extension of UPLB, discussed University Research Governance and Culture. In addition, Dr. Janette H. Malata-Silva, the UPLB Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, presented Digitalizing Student Affairs and Services: Model of Practice in the New Normal while Mr. Jose Limbay Lahi O. Espaldon, the Director of Ugnayan ng Pahinungod of UPLB, shared about Institutionalizing Public Service through Volunteerism: UPLB Ugnayan ng Pahinungod. 

Moreover, Dr. Frechie Belle O. Lo, an assistant professor from the College of Forestry and Natural Resources of UPLB, tackled HEIs as an Edutourism Destination. Dr. Jenielyn T. Padrones, Director of the Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education of UPLB, introduced Building Connections, Shaping Futures: UPLB Initiatives on Co-creating Knowledge and Public Service with Higher Education Institutions. 

Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU), South Cotabato State College (SCSC), Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology (CFCST), Cotabato State University (CotSU), Mindanao State University- General Santos City (MSU-GSC), and Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST) were among the SUCs present in the seminar. Also, Maria Theresa Magdolot represented Dr. Nelia Alibin, the Commission on Higher Education Regional Office (CHEDRO) XII Director.

The activity, composed of five plenary sessions, highlighted UPLB’s best practices in research, extension, student affairs, public service, volunteerism, educational tourism, and institutional development. Guided by Dr. Malata-Silva of UPLB, a plenary roundtable discussion took place after the presentations, highlighting the institutional practices and initiatives of the SUCs present. The event was in coordination with CHEDRO XII.
