Outstanding USM Alumna for Research Delivers Lecture on Invasive Gastropods and Nematode Hitchhikers

Irma Tandingan-De Ley, an outstanding alumna of University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in the field of research, and now an Associate Project Scientist from the University of California-Riverside, returned to USM to share her expertise through a lecture titled ‘Nematode hitchhikers of Invasive Gastropods in the US and the Philippines’ at the USM College of Agriculture Annex, on October 18, 2024. This event was part of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) “Balik Scientist” program.

Mrs. Tandingan-De Ley was recently recognized with the Outstanding Alumna Research Award by the USM Alumni Association (USMAA) on September 30, 2024. Her research interests focus on nematology, nematode taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny, and the biological control of gastropods.

Her lecture aimed to provide insights into the various types of gastropods and nematode hitchhikers in the United States (US) and the Philippines. Included in her discussion were their importance and mitigation strategies, their life cycles, and their interactions with ecosystems. She also addressed the risks and threats posed by these species to crops, biodiversity, and ecosystems. According to her research, 99% of gastropods in Mindanao are Invasive Alien Species (IAS). While molluscicides can manage invasive mollusk species effectively, they may also be toxic to humans, animals, the environment, and non-target organisms.

Her lecture ignited fresh ideas for student theses and research projects at USM, inspiring the academic community to delve deeper into these important environmental topics.

Faculty members from the College of Agriculture (CA), College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), the Graduate School, and students from these colleges were also in attendance.
