Five experts from the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM): Maria Luz D. Calibayan, EdD; Shandra C. Gonsang, PhD; Mariz P. Balquin, PhD; Erwin A. Mallo, PhD; and Vicente T. Delos Reyes, PhD –presented results of their research and development endeavors during the second episode of the Scholars Presenting Advanced Research Knowledge (SPARK) Conference Series, held at the USM Commercial Building, on August 20, 2024. This conference was organized as part of SPARK project headed by Mary Joy S. Cañolas, PhD, in coordination with the SOCCSKSARGEN Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (SOXAARDEC), and Extension Services Office (ESO).

The event, hosted by Dr. Mitzi Aileen M. Alba was attended by USM faculty, students, and some members of the University Research Development and Extension Committee (URDEC). Among those present were Debbie Marie B. Verzosa, PhD, Vice President of Research, Development, and Extension (RDE); Glyn G. Magbanua, PhD, Director of the ESO; Julius Jerome G. Ele, PhD, the new Director of the SOXAARRDEC; Marlyn M. Resurreccion, PhD, Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) and Prof. Anamarie B. Uyangurin, CASS Extension Coordinator.

The conference featured an engaging discussion segment where each researcher was paired with a discussant. These discussants—Prof. Winnie O. Aquino, Ms. Sandrah M. Saudagal, PSMS. Maria Theresa Delos Reyes, Prof. Maricar U. Juaneza, and Prof. Elangbai Dimasingkil—posed thought-provoking questions, delving deeper into the research presented. Students and faculty members also contributed to the lively Q&A sessions, enhancing the dialogue around the presented topics.

To this successful second episode of SPARK, the organizers expressed hope that SPARK would continue to be successful in its future episodes, allowing returning scholars from different USM colleges to showcase their expertise and dedication to research.
