The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) officially opens its College of Medicine (COM) building through a turnover ceremony today, August 19, 2024, with Cotabato Province Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño Mendoza, MNSA, as the guest of honor and speaker.

In her message, Gov. Mendoza emphasized the high importance of education to every student. She shared that just like the students, she was once just like them. Her ability to persevere and maintain discipline was the key to her accomplishments in life.

“Education is the best equalizer… if you have the proper education, you can defend yourself, you can take care of yourself, and you have a better chance to compete in this very complex environment.” She underscored.

Likewise, Dr. Kadil M. Sinolinding Jr., the Minister of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), attended the ceremony. In his message of support, he mentioned the strong partnership between BARMM and USM.

“Ang paaralang ito ay sinimulan po ng isang Moro Princess (referring to Bai Hajda Fatima Matabay Plang) and she only dreamed of one thing, to have the Moro people and the Cotabato people enjoy quality education para po sa lahat.” He ended.

Meanwhile, the official turnover of the building transpired when Mr. Frederick L. Castro, the project manager of GRECO Construction and Supply, handed over the key to USM President Francisco Gil N. Garcia, and then to Dr. Louise Cecilia B. Balajadia, the USM-COM Dean.

President Garcia, in his acceptance speech, recognized Senator Pia S. Cayetano, J. Prospero E. de Vera III, DPA, Dr. Dahlia S. Arancel, and Gov. Mendoza for their continued support, especially in establishing the College of Medicine at USM.

Further, Fr. Fred Palomar, DCK, led the blessing of the building.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Balajadia expressed her appreciation to all who helped them establish the college.

The Board of Regents, Board Members of the Province of Cotabato, Mr. Ben Guzman of LGU, Kabacan, administrative council, UIPMET, USM-COM full-time faculty members, and COM, CHS, CSM, and ULS students attended the ceremony.
