May 27, 2024In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) President Francisco Gil N. Garcia and OIC Vice President for Academic Affairs Prof. Marcos F. Monderin attended the National Higher Education Day (NHED) Summit 2024, held at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on May 15, 2024.
Secretary J. Prospero E. de Vera III, the CHED Chairman, presented a report to His Excellency President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., and key stakeholders about the milestones achieved by CHED over the past 30 years.
Guided by its theme: “USAP, ULAT, UGNAY. Access, Quality, and Competitiveness at the Core of Higher Education Reforms”, the Presidents/Heads/Officers-In-Charge of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) and CHED-Recognized Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) attended the activity.
As one of the highlights of the anniversary and summit, the awarding ceremony of the 2024 CHED- Philippine Anti-Illegal Drugs Strategy (PADS) for Higher Education Innovative Awards also transpired on May 17, 2024, at the CHED Auditorium, CP Garcia Avenue, UP Diliman, Quezon City.
President Garcia, Dr. Ronielyn Pinsoy, the USM-Kidapawan City Campus Chancellor, and Dr. Eimer Estilloso, the USM Vice President for Administration and Finance, received the Certificate of Recognition of USM during the awarding. USM is among the 34 universities in the country awarded the certificate as national finalists for its best effort in institutionalizing the anti-illegal drug campaign.
PADS was created in 2018 with two components—to address the drug demand and drug supply reduction. This program is in line with creating drug-free communities in 2022.
In his speech, Sec. de Vera underscored that through the help of the Higher Education Institutions, the implementation of PADS resulted in multiple accomplishments.
“We do this for two reasons. It is always important to recognize success because those who are responsible must be recognized for their good job… but as every institution succeeds, we need to document their success. They not only serve as examples for others but encourage them to do more.” Sec. de Vera concluded by referring to the recognition of the 34 HEIs out of more or less two thousand HEIs in the nation.
The event aims to showcase the significant strategies, projects, and innovations being implemented by Higher Education Institutions (HELs) in the country.
