Senator Imee Marcos led the distribution of cash assistance to 2000 University of Southern Mindanao students on March 23, 2024, at the USM Auditorium, Kabacan, Cotabato.
Julieta F. Clavel, the head of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) of Region XII, along with the DSWD personnel and staff of the Office of Student Affair (OSA), facilitated the distribution of 5000 pesos cash assistance to 2000 USM beneficiaries
In her message, Senator Marcos spoke briefly on the conversion of MIT to USM and said, “You’ve got a long way indeed; what started as a small school many years ago has now become a very large school. It was a mere MIT (Mindanao Institute of Technology), and in 1978, with my father’s [Ferdinand Marcos Sr.] dream, through presidential decree 1312, MIT became the University of Southern Mindanao. With that, we have a personal and family commitment to your school.”
Sen. Marcos also mentioned the ratings and topnotchers of USM in the recent licensure examinations. Jokingly, she underscored that students not only study hard but also enjoy student life alongside the academic demands. Lastly, she mentioned the growing prices of goods in the country, and the needs of a family, aside from the tuition fees, and highlighted that the cash assistance could accommodate other necessities of the students.
In an interview, Kay Cee Fernandez, a student recipient enrolled in BS Development Communication program, expressed her gratitude as one of the beneficiaries of the program “I am thankful, [kasi] napili ako. I’m a working student and pandagdag [ang cash assistance] pambili ng laptop, kasi 3rd year student na [ako] and kailangan ko po ng laptop for my thesis”. She spoke.
Governor Emmylou “Lala” J. Talino Mendoza, Mayor Evageline Guzman, 3rd District Representative Congresswoman Samantha Santos, and DSWD XII Director Loreto Cabaya Jr. graced the activity.
Dr. Maria Leida M. Donque, the OSA Director, in coordination with the respective units of the university, spearheaded the activity. Members of the Board of Regents (BOR), administrative council, faculty members, and staff were also in attendance at the activity.
According to an article posted by DSWD, the AICS or Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation is one of the social welfare services of the DSWD that provides medical assistance, burial, transportation education, food, or financial assistance that could help support the primary services or needs of a person or family. Its objective is to help the poor countrymen in crisis to meet their needs.
