Workshop Empowers Future Healthcare Leaders in IEC Development

In a lively corner of the University of Southern Mindanao’s College of Medicine and Allied Sciences, an exciting event took place on March 8, 2024. The 1-Day Training-Workshop on Developing Effective Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) Materials brought together 180 freshmen students from prestigious healthcare programs. The goal was simple: equip these aspiring healthcare professionals with the tools they need to make a positive impact.

Ms. Jza Taposok, the College Extension Coordinator, led the training, with support from Dr. Mary Joy S. Canolas, the Extension Services Office Director. Together, their aim was to ensure that students from Nursing, Midwifery, and Pharmacy programs grasped the vital concepts of IEC crucial for promoting health and changing behaviors.

At the forefront of the workshop was Mr. Jaypee P. Monfort, an IEC Project staff, supported by Mr. Diether M. Barro, also from the ESO, and CBDEM student interns. Mr. Monfort guided participants through engaging sessions designed to enhance their skills in crafting effective communication materials.

During the workshop, participants delved into the significance of IEC materials in community engagement and effective communication strategies. They learned how to select appropriate print materials, develop content, and conduct pretests to ensure their materials effectively conveyed messages.

With a hands-on approach, attendees dived into designing various IEC materials such as brochures and pamphlets. Despite lacking design experience, they were taught basic graphic design principles to create visually appealing and informative materials.

The workshop proved to be a transformative experience for the 180 freshmen participants. Not only did they gain theoretical knowledge, but they also acquired practical skills essential for their future roles in healthcare.
