For the first time competing in the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) Science Colloquium, 2 students from the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) bagged the oral presentation awards during the 3rd Science Research Colloquium at Sun City Suites, General Santos City on March 5, 2024.

Danica L. Santulio, a 4th-year BS Fisheries student, won the 1st Best Oral Presentation award with her research, “Unveiling Mercury Pollution in the Understudied Sipunculan Species of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape”. Meanwhile, Cedrick A. Barba, a USM BS Fisheries alumus, took home the 3rd Best Oral Presentation award in his paper, “The Current Status of Gleaning Fishery and Marine Mollusks in Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.” Both were under the supervision of their research adviser, Prof. Leonilla V. Papalid.

Moreover, Mindanao State University -General Santos City (MSU-GSC), Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU), Ramon Magsaysay Memorial College (RMMC), and Alabel Science High School also joined the competition.

A week-long activity conducted annually by SBPS-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO), Department of Environment and Natural Resources XII (DENR XII), all research studies reviewed were conducted in Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape that involves marine diversity, conservation, and marine environmental issues and challenges.
