February 21, 2024The University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Hospital hosted Operation Smile, a transformative medical initiative, from February 15 to February 18, 2024. This year, the hospital catered to 40 patients from the Municipality of Kabacan and neighboring municipalities, including the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
Planned originally for a different venue, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the project seamlessly transitioned to the USM Hospital in 2014, ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of essential medical services.
The Advance Craniofacial Project Philippines Inc. (ACPPI) headed by Dr. Rico Nebres, president/plastic surgeon, the Provincial Government headed by Gov. Emmylou โLala” Taliรฑo-Mendoza, 3rd District Representative Congresswoman Ma. Alana Samantha Santos, 602nd Brigade, 7th Field Artillery Battalion (7th FAB), 10th Field Artillery Battalion (10th FAB), Alpha Phi Omega (APO), Smile Train, University of Southern Mindanao, and USM Hospital, along with the Faculty Association, Non-Teaching Association, and Alumni Association, joined forces to bring Operation Smile to fruition.
Talking with UPRIO, RA Abellera, a nurse from the USM Hospital, extended his gratitude to USM President Francisco Gil N. Garcia for the strong support of the initiative for the public. โWe will never get tired of serving the public. As long as we can, we will continue serving.” He ended.
In an exclusive interview with Congresswoman Samantha Santos, the 3rd District Representative of Cotabato Province and a key figure behind Operation Smile, she shared insightful observations on the profound impact of the medical initiative, particularly on young patients. Expressing concern for the youth involved, Cong. Sam emphasized the potential loss of confidence as they grow, highlighting the importance of addressing physical and emotional well-being.
Affirming Rep. Sam’s office commitment to community welfare, she conveyed an open-door policy and envisioned a hospital that fosters a mindset of health and accessibility. She aims for individuals to leave not only with physical healing but also with renewed confidence and hope.
Touching upon her advocacy for the provincial hospital to achieve regional status, she underscored the importance of providing affordable healthcare services to all. Her vision includes the hospital becoming a beacon of health and wellness for the entire region, emphasizing her dedication to making quality healthcare accessible to everyone.
Drawing parallels between public service and love relationships, Cong. Samantha emphasized that communication is the key to vibrant and fruitful relationships. This analogy underscores the significance of transparent and open communication in personal relationships and the realms of public service and healthcare advocacy.
Operation Smile at USM stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders with its mission to provide a deeper understanding and impact on the community members’ physical and emotional well-being.
