Guided by the theme: “Excellence in USM RDE Towards Societal Impact”, the annual USM Midyear In-House Review was conducted on July 20, 2023 at the USM Commercial Center.

A total of 75 completed and on-going research papers were presented in four parallel sessions: 1) 18 in Basic Research; 2) 20 in Applied Research, 3) 20 in Extension; and 4) 17 in Social Research, Extension, and Product Development.

Thirteen (13) esteemed experts were tasked to evaluate the research papers: Dr. Naomi G. Tangonan, Dr. Krizler C. Tanalgo, and Engr. Willie Jones B. Saliling in the Basic Research category; Dr. Edward A. Barlaan, Dr. Khris June L. Callano, and Assoc. Prof. Bryan Lloyd P. Bretaña in the Applied Research; Dr. Josephine L. Arbes, Dr. Ardniel A. Baladjay, and Dr. Josephine R. Migalbin in the Extension; and Dr. Elizabeth C. Molina, Dr. Romiel John P. Basan, Dr. Apple R. Ureta, and Dr. Astrofil Hyde M. Alcala in the Social Research, Extension, and Product Development.

In an interview with one of the research presenters, Assoc. Prof. Marilyn Painagan-Calub shared the significance of her research in the field of engineering to society.

“My project is personal to me because during my childhood, we lived in an unelectrified and unserved community. I have my heart for those people na target namin for our project,” Assoc. Prof. Calub shared. “Using the available resources, I want them to have a source of electricity, to give them light because I know how hard it is na walang kuryente at lampara lang ang meron kapag gabi,” she added.

Director for Extension Services and Overall Coordinator of Midyear In-House Review Dr. Mary Joy Cañolas highlighted that the event’s purpose was not solely for presenting and evaluating the papers but also to build collaboration among the researchers.

“The Midyear In-House Review was created para naman kung meron mga hindi nakitang kulang o mali during conceptualization, ma-check pa siya. Ibig sabihin meron pa siyang opportunity para ma-correct na hindi pa huli ang lahat,” Dr. Cañolas said.

“Collaborative effort din ito siya, kasi may mga invited panel of evaluators tayo na handang i-share ‘yong knowlege and experiences nila. Also, the researchers can learn from each other. Indeed, it is a learning opportunity,” she added.

Meanwhile, USM President Dr. Francisco Gil Garcia, whose research was also presented, expressed in his opening message that the gathering of professionals to present their papers is a chance to showcase and appreciate their developments for the past six months.

“The In-House Review provides a unique opportunity for us to deal with our latest developments across research disciplines. It is a platform where we celebrate our collective achievements and foster collaboration and knowledge sharing,” he mentioned.

Also, he emphasized that the goal is to create openness where utilizing constructive feedback is a need to redefine ideas and directions for the ongoing research.

Together with Dr. Cañolas, Director for USMARD Center Dr. Efren Mangulama, Director for Research and Development Prof. Lydia Pascual, and Director for PICRI Research Dr. Abubakar Murray presented their respective outputs to Vice President for RDE Dr. Ma. Teodora Cabasan during the closing program.
