Millions of people watched from all over the country, but he just needed to impress five hurados. Nervous, but he went on to sing the first note, and that note signified the beginning of his future money notes – the note that would change his life forever.

Aljun Alborme, a 4th year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management from the University of Southern Mindanao, competed in the prestigious TV reality singing competition, Tawag ng Tanghalan, a segment of the famous noontime show It’s Showtime of ABS-CBN. He was one of the few chosen contenders out of a thousand who auditioned in NCCC Mall of Davao in December 2017.

Alborme, who is a native of Barangay Malabuan, Makilala, North Cotabato, first appeared in the said competition on February 24, 2018 as a daily contender representing Mindanao. Dubbed as the “Brokalista ng Makilala”, he brought the pride of his hometown along with him. Alborme sang the classic Michael Bolton song “To Love Somebody” for his first performance.

“Nanginginig ako pagtapak ko sa stage, pero dalawang sentence pa lang sa kanta ko, nagpalakpakan na ang mga tao. Dun nawala ang kaba ko dahil nakita kong nagustuhan nila ang performance ko, kaya’t ginanahan na rin akong magperform (I was trembling the moment I stepped on the stage, but just two sentences into my song, the crowds cheered. That was the time I lost my nervousness as I saw the people enjoying my performance, so I had fun performing for them),” Alborme said. He also added he was so glad he made it out his first performance unscathed as he was given a standing ovation by everyone inside the studio.

When asked what among the judges’ comments he couldn’t forget, he answered, “Yung kay K Brosas. Nung sinabi niyang ‘Kapag hindi ikaw ang mananalo, magwawala ako’ (It was when K Brosas said, ‘If you will not be named winner today, I’ll go berserk)”. That was the moment Alborme realized it was his time. True enough, garnering 95.2%, he won among the daily contenders and was given the chance to challenge the defending champion.

To contest the golden microphone, Alborme sang another Michael Bolton classic hit “How am I supposed to live without you?” He stayed calm during his entire performance and remained so until the defending champion finished singing. When the winner was announced, Alborme secured the golden microphone with an impressive 97.4% score from the judges, and his conquest to proceed to the next round began.

As soon as he was crowned daily champion, his epithet changed from “Ang Brokalista ng North Cotabato” to “Ang Farmtastic Tinig ng North Cotabato”. Alborme continued to win the following days, singing another Michael Bolton trademark classic “Said I love you but I lied” on his first title defense on February 26, Monday. On March 1, Thursday, he secured his ticket to the Semifinals through singing the famous Air Supply great hit “Having you near me.” He considers it the breakthrough moment of his life.

Beaming with pride and happiness, the USM community welcomed Alborme and his parents when they visited USM and the Office of the President Dr. Francisco Gil N. Garcia on March 5, 2018. From a regular USM student who would perform during University events, Alborme has truly come a long way, proving that dreams really do come true.

All I want to say is that, whatever your achievements in life, use them for the good of other people in order for you to inspire them as well to do good. I also encourage you to pray always because there are times in our lives when we don’t know ourselves as we are in our lowest point, thus we need guidance and help from God).”

Alborme will be competing in the competition’s Semifinals stage and asks for everyone’s support and prayers, especially those who are not just from the province of North Cotabato, but the rest of Mindanao as well. (Franz Sumangil, The Mindanao Tech)
