|Written by CEMagallon|
The University is on the process of complying with the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2008. The standard sets the criteria for a quality management system, which is an internationally recognized framework for good quality management. It is in this context that USM submits itself to the system to determine whether its set of policies, processes and procedures are in place or not.
To become ISO certified, the University initially underwent the first step to quality management system which necessitated the conduct of the Training on 7S Systems of Good Housekeeping. This was held on June 22-23, 2016 at the USM Hostel. As a follow through, an awareness session was held on July 4-5, 2016 at the USM Skyroom. The executive briefing of USM top management was piloted on June 21 at the Boardroom, Administration Building to establish commitment. Other processes included the following: the management documentation review, preliminary audit, and clearance of non-conformities, all of which were aimed to identify corrective actions that would eliminate non-conformity to the quality management standard.
To effectively and efficiently attain the objective of becoming compliant to ISO standard, Ms. Jane C. Javier, the managing consultant from Intelek Quest Management Consulting Services was hired to provide technical assistance. The ISO Core Group composed of thirty (30) members was also created for this purpose with Dr. Riceli C. Mendoza as the head, Quality Management Representative (QMR) and Dr. Anita C. Sornito, as the deputy Management Representative. The Core units submitted for ISO evaluation were the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and College of Agriculture (CA). Other colleges/units/offices were considered as support units.
With this certification, USM students can be confident that the University is dedicated to maintain the highest efficiency and responsiveness possible in achieving its ultimate goal — guaranteed student satisfaction.
To maintain quality, USM ISO internal auditors shall perform periodic audits to ensure compliance and to assess initiatives for continued improvement. With this, USM students can expect consistent quality services from the University.
