About

The College has evolved from a Department of Agricultural Engineering into a College of Engineering when the Mindanao Institute of Technology was converted into a University on March 13, 1978. Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) was offered in 1983 then followed with Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS), Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE), and bachelor of Science in Information Science in Information Management (BSIM) were offered in 1997 and 2003, respectively. The College was renamed as College of Engineering and Computing (CENCOM). This occurred during the Deanship of Dr. Rommel G. Tangonan.

The pioneering program was the Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering (BSAE). It was approved in principle during the 42nd meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Mindanao Institute of Technology held at Jade Vine Hotel, Manila on September 23, 1964. The first batch of the BSAE started in the School Year 1968-1969; however, the approval of which was only on December 13, 1968 during the 55th meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Mindanao Institute of Technology, held at Sunya Aristocrat Restaurant, Manila.

The Department of Agricultural Engineering was initially headed by Engineer Edilberto N. dela Torre, an electrical mechanical engineer in 1968. Due to his untimely death, the leadership of the department was passé on to Engr. Alfredo C. Pepito who stayed as chairman from April 1969 to May 1970. Engr. Benjamin F. Fortinez Sr. assumed the leadership of the department when Eng. Alfredo C. Pepito went on study leave on June 1970. When MIT became a university in 1978, Engr. Fortinez became the first Dean of the College of Engineering. Eng Fortinez remained as a dean until May 1988. Dr. Eustaqui Bayotlang was designated as the next dean from June1988 to May 1995. Dr. Rufino S. Garzon next assumed the deanship from June 1995 until December 1998. Dr. Rommel Tangonan assumed the deanship from December 1998 to May 2009. Dr. Guttierez became the dean from June 2009 to October 2010. The current dean is Dr. Nelson M. Belgira who assumed the deanship of the College on November 2, 2010.

The college is committed to produce graduates of higher education in engineering and information technology education in this part of the country. Presently, the college has 6 degree programs: BSAE, BSCE, BSCpE, BSECE, BSCS, and BS Information System from 1973 up to the present. The College produces graduates who are leaders in their own right in different agencies, holding positions both in the government and the private agencies as chief executive officers, middle managers, and even successful managers of their own businesses. It has also produced a number of academicians, instructors, professors, vice presidents, PRESIDENT, deans in private and government institutions and the latest of who, is currently president of ASSCAT in Agusan del Sur, Dr. Virgilio Garcia. A number of our IT related graduates are working abroad as specialists in their fields.

From 1973 to 2003, the college has produced 26 topnotchers in the AE Licensure Examination. From 2003 upto the present, CENCOM has produced 10 Civil Engineering topnotchers. Although we are still below National passing in the AE Licensure examination, the percentage of passing has improved from 29% (2010) to 40% (2011) to 44.83% (2012). One measure to improve the passing rate was to let the graduates review at UP and MSU. Our graduates in their licensure examination did very well in the previous years.

In terms of Accreditation, the College has submitted degree programs to AACUP for accreditation. These are BS Agricultural Engineering (level III), BS Civil Engineering (level II), BS Computer Science (level I) , BS Computer Engineering and BS EcE has passed prelim survey, and the BS Information systems, candidate for level I.
